Wonderstorm Prince snorted, clearly uneasy about his first race. Glancing at Sam and Mark, he snorted glad to have a few familiar faces with him. Tail twitching, he shifted his weight on his hooves, raising his head in fear of the noise of the crowd as he was led around the viewing paddock .

Darby walked out of the jockey lounge, and over to Mark and Sam, wearing her own silks. Taking a deep breathe, she smiled at the older two adults. "We've been training hard, but he does look a little bit nervous," she murmured, resting a soothing hand on Prince.

Daisy glanced over at David. "Shouldn't we be getting to a t.v. so we can watch Prince's first race?" She asked her brother.

Sam gave Prince a reassuring pat on the neck.

"It's okay boy, you got this." She said softly. She then watched Darby as she came out of the jockey's lounge, making her way over to them in her bright red and green silks. She gave the younger girl a smile, briefly looking back at Mark before giving a slight nod.

"Yeah, he seems a bit nervous but, you two should be just fine. You both have trained hard these past few years. Hopefully once he sees the track, his training will kick in and it'll be smooth sailing from there. Honestly, I'm more concerned about your reputation and your post number. Everyone knows that this is Emile's first foal, and that you're the jockey who won the triple crown after over 40 years of not having a triple crown champion. Hasn't been one since you and Emile, either. A lot of people look up to you, but some of them don't and will play dirty to make sure you two don't win. I know we talked about this before when you were riding Emile but... just a friendly reminder. And with post-position 1, you're liable to get boxed in if you don't come out of the gate fast and stay near the front, which may burn his energy. We don't know how he likes to run yet in actual races, so... just let him do his thing. If he wants to be near the front, let him. If he wants to sit mid-pack, let him sit mid-pack, just make sure he's on the outside. And if he wants to sit in back, let him sit in the back. It doesn't really matter if we win or not, once we figure him and his running style out he'll be a champion in no time like his sire." She said with a smile. Mark gave a nod in agreement.

"A lot of this might sound redundant but... figured we'd give you the run-down anyway since it's been awhile since you've sat a starter horse." He commented with a small laugh, moving into position to give her a leg-up into the saddle.

David looked up from his book to look at his sister before giving a small nod, "Oh yeah, that's happening right about now, isn't it? Let's go inside and watch!" He said, getting up off the hay bale he'd been sitting on and placing his book down on the yellow straw before heading out of the barn and up toward the house. He opened the door and went into the house, going to the living room and grabbing the remote, pressing the power button. As the screen came to life, he hit the numbers for the channel into the remote, watching as the channel popped up on the screen. Currently, the cameras were focusing on the viewing paddock.

"Oh, look, there they are! Prince looks a little nervous if you ask me. I'm sure he'll be great once they're out on the track though." He commented, sinking down into the tan couch opposite the T.V. He couldn't wait to see what would happen. He wanted them to win but Prince was young and inexperienced when it came to actual races. They'd run him on Mark's practice track before, sure, and even had mock races with some of Mark's other horses and Emile, and while Prince had done well, it was still nothing like an actual race. He wouldn't say that Prince was sure to win, but he was sure that it wasn't impossible or even unlikely that they would win. They had a good chance, and he had high hopes for the young horse and Darby.

Prime snorted, tail flicking. Seeing Darby he started to relax a bit, tossing his head as Darby was helped up onto his back. Following the lead pony, he skirted away at first, but pricked his ears when he saw the track. Starting to feel the excitement, he started settling down and went through warm up nicely.

Darby chuckled and nidded understanding. "Outside might mean more ground on the curves, but if we get out fast enough we should be fine," she replied. "Ready boy?" She asked, accepting Mark's help with the leg up. Nodding at the lead pony ad it's rider, she sat confident in the saddle as they went through the post parade and their warm up. "Good boy," she murmured as they where loaded into the gate, Darby shifting her weight to crouch over Prince's shoilder. Closing her eyes, she visualized a win, taking a deep breathe. "We can do this," she murmured, glad to see Prince's ears flick back to her.

Daisy nodded. "Looks like he calmed down a bit when he got on the track though, post posion one though may give them so troubke though, " she murmured.

Sam and Mark headed up to the owner's box to watch the race, taking their seats in their section. They both looked at one another before looking down at the track in anticipation. Prince's first race... they were about to see what Prince was made of, and if he was just as capable as Emile or not. Who knows, perhaps he'd even out-shine his sire one day.

David gave a nod, looking from his sister to the T.V. "Yeah... hopefully they do good. Go Prince! Go Darby!" He said, already cheering them on as they waited for the gates to open.

Re: Run or Be Caught [New/Time Skip]

Post  Bec on Fri Sep 01, 2017 12:54 pm

Lazarus:
Show Name: Cathedral Calamity [previously Cayenne Chile Mocha]

Name: Lazarus [previously Spicy]

Breed: Clydesdale x Shire

Appearances:

Gender: Stallion

Personality: Hard-working and excited to learn when training or competing. In the paddock, he's about as laid-back as can be; he finds the relaxation enjoyable. He loves people -- especially children -- the most out of anything, and he will listen to their command above all else. As far as horses go, he will fight for the dominant position in the herd; however he won't bite or kick unless his power is particularly tested by a horse of equal size or larger, mostly using his shoulder and rear to push you around.

He's a bit awkward when it comes to relationships with other horses. He's only ever worked in teams for short periods of time, and spent most of his life training or competing away from his homestead; being around one horse for an extended period of time will come as a new experience to him, as he's never really had someone by his side 24/7. His only real longstanding friendships were with a few of his competitors that frequented competitions with him; particularly a miniature from his chariot racing days.

If you ask him a question, be prepared for a long-winded answer accompanied by a story you didn't ask for. Though storytelling is something he does quite well, so you may not have too many qualms listening to it; after all, he has been a lot of places and done a lot of things.

Age: 7 yrs

Height(Must be in (hands high)): 17.2 hh

History: Bred for personality, it's no wonder Lazarus has such a calm demeanor.

'Rus has gotten around quite a bit in the world of the less common equestrian sports. His beginnings were as humble as any, a simple farm work horse, bomb-proofed to be a child's pleasure. It wasn't a glamorous life, but it was one he was happy to live, and he worked hard to please. Catching wind of his work ethic, his caretakers decided to put the draft to a more frugal use; thus, he began a life of rigorous training and competing.

Life working on the farm had been all good and well, but he couldn't help but find himself wholly absorbed in his daily training. Every gear in his brain was turning -- facing constant new challenges to find solutions to; he loved it.

They began with pulling, after that they moved on to driving, and soon he found himself part of a novelty all-draft chariot racing team. He was invited to local and even regional parades, pulling a cart for his family and fans, garnering reputation as the kind-eyed draft that could; he may not have always won first, but he managed to make the top three of just about every competition he was in. Which, by the way, was quite a bit. He would be entered in competitions before his training for that sport had even begun, so it was no surprise when people were in shock to see him show up somewhere new a week after an entirely different event!

Breeding requests began coming in, and he was happy to oblige; spreading his genes to a variety of different horses in different sporting events and jobs. Wanting to reach out for a greater following, he started out his career in trick riding and showmanship.

At one of the trick riding competitions, a man approached his team and proposed that a horse that calm and powerful would be put to good use in a renaissance fair, as a jousting mount. His owners were hesitant, they were unaware that the sport had been made modern, and they were unsure if they would be comfortable with their steed being placed on a track with an eleven-foot pole charging towards his head.

Agreeing to check it out, they soon saw the potential the man had meant. These horses had to be entirely trusting in their riders, capable of handling the weight of the armor on both their rider and themselves, and with a steady enough foot not to cause a spill. These were all things they'd observed in their own stallion. They hired a rider, and from there, his fame went global.

Traveling overseas to find new competitions to enter, making appearances in jousting documentaries, and even being cast for roles in movies and shows; he had truly made his mark, and his owners had made bank. But his owners couldn't handle the fame. It was a constant influx of emails and phone calls, requesting more and more appearances and inviting him to more and more competitions. They decided it was time to end it; but they knew he loved his new life, and he did. The payoff for all his hard work; the attention, the admiration, the respect. You could tell he loved his job, it was part of what made him so good at it. So he gave them one final paycheck, one final improvement to their ranch, one final safety net for the bank. And he left them.

Loading up into the trailer was the hardest thing he'd ever had to do. He'd been theirs for his entire life, that ranch was his home, born and raised. Those people were his family. They made him who he was today. Sure, he'd been handled by other people before. He'd been away from home for long periods of time, he'd had professional trainers hired to teach him, but it was all because of them.

As he looked out the bars, he gazed longingly at his family for the final time, feeling scared for the first time since foalhood. Surrealism took over once the engine revved and the wheels began moving. He struggled for a moment to find his balance, feeling like his legs had reverted to the wobbly toothpicks on hinges of a newborn. The road took them -- and soon it took his home, too -- until he could see nothing behind him but asphalt.

Owner(if tame): Henry Reid

Miscellaneous Facts: He has never met one of his foals. He loves children. He likes to talk. He's quite the Casanova if you give him the opportunity to be, and would likely enjoy a harem. He thinks donkeys and mules are especially cute. His demeanor changes from when he plays to when he works, focus and composure almost draining him of his usual personality, making him look like an entirely different horse. During work he also puffs himself up to look bigger and more intimidating/regal, depending on how you view it. He's incredibly susceptible to tickling, around his flank in particular. He currently has two sore spots; his previous family, and his lack of friends. Poke fun at either and you're in for a fight. His previous names are endearing to him if you know them; in fact, he prefers 'Spicy' when he's not working, and 'Lazarus' when he is. Odd boy.

Mate/Crush: None at the moment, but he's a flirt regardless of sex.

Theme Song: The Brothers Bright - Grit, Sweat & Love

Henry:
Name: Henry Reid

Personality: Bubbly and upbeat, a near constant beaming smile forming at his lips. If not happy, then inquisitive and curious. These would be his base emotions, and it's rare to see him as anything but.

He likes to poke fun and joke around a lot, that's not to say he's not a focused worker of course; just a good conversationalist and a good friend to pull a prank on to put him in his place.

He knows more about horses than you'd expect, he just looks like somebody whom wouldn't know their way around a saddle; more of the look of a city-slicker. Which, really, he is. Despite being born and raised in a city, he spent many summers helping his uncles on their ranch. That, and he did a lot of research before arriving at the farm.

Impulsive and driven by a strong set of morals. He's more... chaotic good, than anything else. If he thinks it's wrong, he'll deal with it in his own personal way. Whether this way is good or not... that's another story. Strangely enough, he'd classify himself as having more of a grey-morality than anything; showcased by his disregard for law so long as it benefits the needy, ie. stealing food from corporations to feed homeless people. A modern day Robin Hood, if you will. A really crappy Robin Hood though.

Appearances: Short, messy light auburn (almost strawberry-blonde) hair with dark roots growing in at the top. Bright hazel eyes. Usually wears bright blues and yellows; a tank top with baggy jeans/sweatpants and a grey or green jacket tied around his waist, with brown combat boots. The more I describe him I keep imagining a hybrid between Tokyo Ghoul's Hide and Ouran's twins. So just have a couple pictures of them and pretend I'm not anime trash please.

Gender: Male

Age (Must be 15 and older): 23 yrs

Height (Must be in feet and inches Ex. 6'2"): 5'11"

History: Growing up in the bad parts of town can be either very helpful, or very detrimental to a person's development. It all depends on their perspective. Is the violence fun, or is it unruly and unjust to people just trying to live a peaceful life? At least that's the usual question of the morals. You'd really think that with a police officer as your mother, you'd be taking the moral high road, but no. In life, Henry decided to take the moral middle ground.

In an apartment building in a big city rife with crime, from a young age theft and violence were just your normal everyday concepts to Henry. Because he grew up with this, he simply learned to deal with it; not like he knew anything else.

His mother, being who she was and in what line of work, began self defense practice during him and his brothers' downtime after school. Just in case.

Regardless of his mother's teachings, he was still certainly one to commit petty theft for snacks from grocery stores. She never knew.

In high school he thought himself as a bit of a gangster, rebelling against his mother silently by assuming that he'd be safe from investigation due to being the child of an officer. He attempted to group together some of his friends to create a gang of their own, hoping to rise in the ranks of the gang war to rival the Big Bads of the gang world. This fell apart when one of his friends had a breakdown about meeting with an illegal arms dealer, which made him rethink that idea.

During college, he came to realize that his junior year roommate was one whom did not give up his dead dream of being in a gang. This wasn't particularly bad, he figured. Just someone stuck in a phase he'd already gone through. Things continued on just fine after that, for several months they actually got on just well and became pretty good friends.

One day, he was invited to attend a special event by this friend. He figured, sure, why not, how bad could it be? He could handle himself in a fight, and it might even be a fun throwback to the past. He followed him into the shittiest part of town, into the outskirts, and to an empty factory building that was no longer in use. As they got closer, he could hear crowds cheering, and what sounded like heavy coughing.

As they entered, his stomach felt ill. It wasn't a gang fight.

It was a dog fighting ring.

Of all the things Henry was okay with, this wasn't one. As his friend turned to him with a smile, asking him who he thought was going to win, he received a well wound punch square to the nose. The arena echoed with the sounds of anger and pain, as everyone took his hit in stride. It was time for violence. Bloody and bruised, Henry made it outside, hastily placing a call to his mom before getting swarmed by more people looking for a fight.

A few minutes later, sirens were blaring and people being taken away. With no evidence to prove he wasn't a member of a gang, nor to dispute that he was participating in the fights, Henry also went to jail for a time. Due to good behavior, he managed to get out after a year and a half, and began on a job search that would get him as far out of the city as possible.

Other: He's bisexual. Loves animals. If asked about why he went to jail, he will come up with a radically wild tale that is completely false, but due to his eccentric nature it may leave you wondering. At first he'll start out generally just excited, but as you get to know him he just gets weird. Despite his desire to escape it, he is excited to take new friends to the city and show them around. His uncles bought him a horse.

Job on Ranch/Stable: Stablehand; Maintenance

Horse/s (only if they own a horse/s): Lazarus

BF/GF/Crush: N/A

Ferris:
Name: Ferris

Breed: Lipizzaner

Appearances: White, with a long wavy mane/tail. Dark grey muzzle/around eyes. Pink snip. Severely underweight, hooves are slightly overgrown and in horrible condition. A bad case of ringworm all along his back, neck, and face; still fresh and pink. Images to convey his coat color, weight and disease below.

Gender: Stallion

Personality: Flighty and undesirable. Easily spooked. He greatly dislikes being confined, and if you let him loose in a pasture it's likely that it will taken upwards of half an hour just to get him back. Humans do frighten him, just due to being whipped and smacked into place. He's territorial and dislikes his personal space bubble being ruptured. His voice is soft, as are his eyes, but you can tell it'll take a lot of work to get him back to being a calm and kind horse.

Deep down, he wants to trust. He wants to be loved, but he's afraid of being left in the cold again.

He listens to direction only out of fear, and if he doesn't fear you he simply won't listen. Granted, he will likely fear you regardless.

His memory is grand, and he will hold grudges.

Age:5

Height(Must be in (hands high)): 15.0 hh

History: He was born into the circus to people whom didn't know how to properly care for a horse.

They taught him to listen with force, shoving him around where he needed to be. He'd watch the other horses preform and did his best to replicate that, never really learning, only demonstrating how well he could memorize a pattern.

His whole life, he's never experienced a pasture or grass. He's only ever been in tiny, confined spaces with far too many other animals packed into it. He'd stand there, tethered to a wall, side by side with horses of varying sizes. The whole room smelled of manure. All the animals he was surrounded by were filthy, no one took the time to groom them outside of shows. Day in and day out, he'd stand. There would be fights, stallions attempting to mount mares, horses getting their legs caught in fences or tangled up in their ropes and falling onto their sides.

He left the barn once every couple days, letting loose with a few other horses in a round pen for a few hours. The camel and ox only left the barn once every couple weeks it seemed.

When show time came around, he'd be put into a fenced in area half the size of a stall and left there for people to watch him before the show. He shook from side to side, trying to get out all of his spare energy, and trying to ignore the crowd poking their hands in and touching him. It was simultaneously overstimulating, and infuriatingly boring. At least he'd been groomed to look his best.

Despite all this, he figured that perhaps he got lucky. He was born, and his parents were there. He was living this hell with family; even if they didn't really acknowledge it. It felt good. Not many of the animals there could say they were with loved ones.

It was the same dull day as before, when he realized that the knot on his lead was loose. Pulling his head back a bit, he managed to undo it entirely. A rush of energy ran through his entire body -- he could do anything! Loud and proud, he pranced throughout the barn, trotting from one end to the other endlessly. He shook his mane and held his head up high; he was truly free. But... no one seemed to care. They went about their usual business, standing at the walls. He was unsure what to do now, they were all so bored. Was it because it was him? Did they want to be free, too?

He walked over to a mare and began trying to untie her lead with his teeth; to no avail. She ignored him. With a snort and a rear, he began racing as fast as he could from side to side, bumping into people, stepping on feet and knocking over smaller or weaker horses. He reached his head into the air and let out a wail, whinnying incessantly as he ran. Now, the crowd was paying attention. All the horses in the barn began rearing and kicking, letting out their own neighs as he ran. The mare from before bumped her rear into him and he mounted her, just as the doors to the barn opened and angry men rushed in.

He was deemed a hazard, and shipped off to the auction house. It was the first time he'd ever been in a trailer alone. His anxiety spiked and he slammed into each side of the metal box, cutting himself in a few places.

As they arrived at the house, they went to open the doors and he bolted past them, running for the most open space he could find. He nearly caused a crash as he crossed the highway, and escaped off into the woods. A call was made about a feral horse being loose, however they've yet to find him; he's out in the wild, confused and afraid, now suffering from an infection and even worse malnourishment than before due to the radical change in his exercise and diet.

Wild or Tame: Feral

Owner(if tame): N/A

Other: He will nip at his handler when instructed to do something he dislikes. He tends to be rather unpredictable at times; especially around mares. It seems he's gone a bit mad at times, he'll wig out in his stall and start 'dancing', tapping his feet and shaking his head from side to side, pacing, chewing on the door and whatnot. Whips scare him. He isn't used to having his own space to move around. Would likely be a good pasture pet, at most a pleasure rider. He will try to bolt from his stall/pen.

Re: Run or Be Caught [New/Time Skip]

Darby crouched over Prince's shoulder's waiting quietly for the last horse to load. Hearing one back, she sighed. "Almost go time, boy," she murmured, knowing he was starting to get antsy. After the last horse was loaded and all horses were standing quietly the gate's open. "Go!" Darby called out, urging Prince out of the gate, knowing they had to get clear of the other horses. Glancing to her side, she sighed as she urged Prince towards the outside and let him settle into his pace, which was just off the leaders. Seeing the horses in front began to tire, Darby gave Prince more reign. "It's go time," she murmured, feeling Prince shift into his highest gear as they passed the leaders and under the wire. "Good boy Prince!" she called out, trying to slow the colt down. "Easy boy," Darby murmured, sitting back on the saddle.

Prince snorted as the gate's opened and he jumped out of the gate, ears back listening to Darby. Settling into his pace he watched stayed even with the number 3 horse for a bit, before feeling Darby urged him a bit, and he started running faster, passing the leading horses right before the finish line. Tossing his head, it was clear he didn't want to slow down and wanted to keep runnin.g

Re: Run or Be Caught [New/Time Skip]

Post  Bec on Fri Sep 01, 2017 1:15 pm

As his new workplace made itself visible, Henry could feel a twinge of excitement start in his toes. This was it; a new life, far, far away from his previous. He couldn't even begin to count the amount of 'thank you's he was about to place at the feet of the people whom were willing to hire him despite his criminal record. It was so exciting! His uncles' ranch had been beautiful, but this was what real country living was all about.

Pulling into the driveway, he checked behind him to see if everything was alright back in the trailer. The horse seemed to have calmed down significantly after so many hours on the road -- he even looked to be asleep. That was good. His uncles had told him that this was a special horse, he'd been very good to them despite only having one other home beforehand, and now he was Henry's. What a way to start your turnaround, right? A free horse and trailer, and a brand new job hundreds of miles away. That excitement was starting to make him a little bit queasy, so he swallowed it and opened the car door.

Setting foot on the ground beneath him felt amazing after such a long drive, but it also felt so foreign. He didn't know what to expect, who he'd be talking to, where to take the horse... he had no idea what the lay of the land was or where he was supposed to be going. Taking a moment to breathe and observe his surroundings, he caught eye of what seemed to be the main office building. It was one step forward and one step back as he turned his head over his shoulder to gaze back out at the road that had taken him here. This... this was going to be good for him.

Mustering up all the courage that he could, he marched onward to place a bit too much of an enthusiastic knock on the door.

-------

Every direction. It was all the same, but not the same. It was all there. Nothing was there anymore. It was so green. It was so tall. It was so enclosed.

Crowded. It was too crowded.

Ferris wildly threw his head from side to side, the whites of his eyes blaring brightly in the lights between the leaves. The trees were towering over him, surrounding him on every possible side. His overgrown hooves stabbed into the ground as he clambered to escape. He had so many ways to go, and yet only he could go forward. If he turned, where would he end up? It wasn't a risk he was willing to take.

It'd been days that he'd been out in this hell with no one to turn to. Perhaps he and the other circus animals didn't talk so much as act indifferently toward one another, but they were still company. Now he was alone, completely and utterly alone with no direction. He was on the ground.

Heaving out a heavy breath of exhaustion, he began to push himself back up. The trees were reaching out for his feet. They were grabbing for him with their long arms, crawling along the ground just to keep him there. No. He couldn't let them get him, he needed to keep going. They couldn't touch him. He wasn't going to let them touch him.

The birds were too loud. He couldn't hear himself run, so he let out a bellowing neigh of frustration, trying to make them go away. Where was he? What was he going to do now? Why did they leave him all alone like this? The people were yelling when he left, he'd done something terrible. He couldn't go back, but he wanted to see his family. He needed them. Maybe if he kept running, he'd find them up ahead. And so, he did.

Daisy let out a cheer as Prince won his first race, when she heard a knock. "Did Sam ro Dad say anything to you today a out a new person?" She asked David. "We're coming!" She called out, heading towards the door, and peeking out the window to make sure. "Don't the usually leave us a note somewhere? She asked.

Sam held her breath as Prince and Darby began to make their move, and Mark bit his lip. Both popped out of their seats, throwing fists to the air as the colt and rider flew past the wire, turning and hugging each other before hurrying down to meet them in the winner's circle.

"That was amazing!" Sam said with a huge grin across her face.

"You two were wonderful!" Mark reiterated with a huge smile of his own.

++++++++++

"Yeah! They won! Go Darby! Go Prince!" David said with smirk plastered across his face as he jumped to his feet, "I knew they could do it!" He added with a small laugh, before turning and looking toward the office door as they heard a knock. He then looked to his sister, shaking his head a small bit.

"No, she didn't tell me anything before she left. Maybe she forgot though, they were kind of in a rush to leave for the race. Or maybe the note's buried under this pile of paperwork here." He said, going over to the desk and shifting some papers around. Not finding anything, he gave a shrug and went over to the door opening it. On the other side he was greeted with the sight of a young man with auburn hair and hazel eyes. With the way he was dressed, he almost looked more like a city-dweller than anything else. But, David gave his best smile.

"Hello, welcome to Blue River Farm! Sam, the owner of the stable, isn't here at the moment. My name is David, I'm the Barn Manager. And this--" he stopped for a second to point at Daisy, "is my sister Daisy. How may we help you?" He asked.
